When you understand the "why," everything shifts
Most of the strategies parents find online aren't wrong, exactly. But they're often built for neurotypical brains. When you apply them to a child with ADHD, they don't work, and that's not your fault, and it's not your child's fault either.
The ADHD brain is genuinely different to a neurotypical brain. Not broken. Your child is not naughty. And this is not bad parenting.
When you understand how it's different-why transitions are so hard, why emotions feel so enormous, why your child can focus for hours on a video game but not for five minutes on homework, something shifts. The frustration starts to soften.
You stop fighting against your child's brain and start working with it. And the whole dynamic at home begins to change.
That shift doesn't happen from reading another article or watching another YouTube video. It happens when you go deeper: when you truly understand your individual child, build real skills around what you've learned, and do it alongside other parents who get it.
Introducing: Understanding Your ADHD Child
I'm delighted to be opening the doors to my Understanding Your ADHD Child group coaching programme, a five-week journey designed specifically for parents of children with ADHD.
We start on Thursday, 21st May at 7:30pm, and we meet online via Zoom for one hour each week in a small, carefully curated group of just four to six parents.
This isn't a lecture series. It isn't a list of tips and tricks. It's a proper coaching programme-warm, practical, and deeply human, where you'll leave each session feeling more informed, more equipped, and considerably less alone.
What We Cover Together
Over five weeks (with a natural break during the May half-term so you're not juggling the programme with chaos at home), we'll work through everything that matters most:
Week 1 — Understanding your child's ADHD brain:
Why the ADHD brain works differently, what executive function actually means, and why this understanding is the foundation for everything else.
Week 2 — Emotional regulation: theirs and yours:
Why children with ADHD feel emotions so intensely, what's really happening during a meltdown, and how your own calm becomes one of your most powerful parenting tools.
Week 3 — Routines, structure, and reducing friction:
How to build routines that work with the ADHD brain, reduce daily battles, and create a home environment where everyone can breathe a little easier.
Week 4 — School, homework, and advocating for your child: Navigating the school system, understanding your child's rights, knowing what to say to teachers, and approaching homework without it destroying your evenings.
Week 5 — You: the parent behind it all:
Because you matter too. We'll talk about parental burnout, self-compassion, and what it really means to look after yourself in the midst of all of this.

A little bit about me
I'm Petra Earnshaw, an ICF ACC-Credentialed Advanced-Certified ADHD Life Coach working exclusively with parents of children with ADHD.
However, my connection to ADHD goes deeper than my professional training. I have ADHD myself, and I wasn't diagnosed until I was 52. For years, I struggled, not just academically, but in my friendships, my emotional regulation, and my sense of self. Looking back, I can see how much I was masking, trying to be who I thought I should be rather than who I actually was.
That personal experience shapes everything about the way I work. When I sit with parents in this programme, I bring not just my coaching skills, but a genuine, lived understanding of what it means to have an ADHD brain, and how transformative it is when you finally understand why.
I'm also a proud advocate for Find the ADHD Girls, because girls with ADHD are so often missed or misdiagnosed, and that matters deeply to me.
